Welcome to GEM!

We have created a Microsoft account for you.  This account will allow you access to internal resources, collaboration, e-mail, and file sharing features used within the mission.

Before You Get Started

You will need:

1.       These instructions on a laptop, desktop computer or tablet

2.       Strong password

3.       Recovery phone number

4.       Mobile device with internet access

Get Signed in for the First Time

Go to http://portal.office.com to sign in with your account.

Your username and temporary password are included in the welcome e-mail. Your password is case sensitive.

You will be prompted to set a new password when you sign in.  The requirements for a secure password are strict, so don’t get frustrated if it keeps asking for something more secure.  I would recommend putting multiple symbols, numbers, uppercase and lowercase letters in your password.

If you forget your password once you have set it and find yourself locked out, you can use the self-serve password reset feature or contact the help desk via e-mail or phone (1-800-436-4488, option 9) to have it reset.

You will be prompted for more information when you sign in the first time.  With the growth of online cyber-attacks, GEM has started proactively requiring multi-factor authentication (MFA) for all accounts.

Below are the recommended settings for multi-factor authentication.

You will need a mobile device (preferably your cell phone) with internet access.

Download the "Microsoft Authenticator" app:

App Store (Apple)

Play Store (Android)

From the drop-down menu, select “Mobile App”.

Select the “Receive notifications for verification” radio button and select “Set up”.

Scan the QR code with the Authenticator app on your phone.  You may need to grant permissions to the camera to use this function.  Once the account has been added in the Authenticator app, select “Next”.

The web page will check to be sure your account is set up on your App.

You will need to provide a secondary form of contact in case your device is lost or temporarily inaccessible.

Once you have completed setting up your security settings, you will be greeted by the Office Portal page.
